A Sweet, Separate Intimacy: Women Writers of the American Frontier, 1800-1922
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Utah Pr (Txt) (April, 2000)
Author: Susan Cummins Miller
Average review score:

A Must Read For All Women & Historians
Susan Cummins Miller, a very gifted editor and writer, has scored a hit with this one! It should be read by every woman, young and old, desiring a woman's insight of the events of the West during its formative years. The book gives the reader a woman's perspective as to the hardships suffered along with moments of humor and the joys of discovery and exploration through essays, travelogues, poetry and letters. The editor has blended well a group of women writers who lived this age of discovery and settlement. Almost all the cultures in the West during the period are presented with their particular view of the events as they lived them. It is a unique collection and I wish I had read this book in college. It certainly would have broadened my horizons and complimented the materials presented in my history and literature classes. Hey, professors! You need to add this book to your must read lists. And, to the author, many thanks for finding a unique niche that had been missed and filling it with a great group of women writers, broadening our historical and literary minds and giving us one great book that can be enjoyed many times over. It will hold a sacred place on my bookshelf.

Wonderful!
From the moment I heard about the premise of this book I waited with anticipation. What joy that it fulfilled everything I expected. Susan is a gifted writer and brings these women's words to life. The book made me desperate for more, both in depth and scope. As easy to take as a novel, it is a history lesson - should I say HERstory - and then some. Superb work.

Oprah should read THIS one
For the first time I really understand the role played by WOMEN in settling the West. This collection of writings by women of all cultures took me to that time and let me feel the joy, loneliness, laughter, exhaustion and fulfillment of settling a new country. It also let me see the life of the American Indian through the eyes of women for the first time. Excellent read.

another Miller classic
Millers heroins traits of strong wills and high pride do not lack in this exciting adventure/romance novel surely to capture your heart.

Excellent!
"Taming Charlotte" is another excellent romantic escape by Linda Lael Miller. I have to go out now and find "Yankee Wife" which is part one and "Princess Annie" which is part two of the series.

The best of her books.
Charlotte is a brave, young girl that will make you both laugh and cry. A great follow-up book to Yankee Wife and lead-in to Princess Annie. One of the first romance books I've read that leaves you worrying until the last page. Of course, there's a happy ending but the journey there wasn't so easy. With the exception of the harem, a story that could very easily take place today. Truly wonderful.

Targeting Pronunciation: The Intonation, Sounds and Rhythm of American English

This a great step-by-step approach to pronunciation
I am a workplace English instructor and find Targeting Pronunciation and the audiocassette package of to be very useful in business settings as well as the classroom as a tool for teaching more effective presentation skills.
It has a fun and clear approach to covering all the essential pronunciation features such as word stress, rhythm patterns, and thought groups, as well as consonant and vowel sounds.

Students enjoy using this book and tapes because of the engaging and varied activities. Whether you are experienced or inexperienced at teaching pronunciation, Targeting Pronunciation a great book to teach from. I recommend the book and audiocassette package: ISBN 0-395-94540-2. It's the best deal and each student has a set of tapes for home practice.

Caution!
This is a really good book, but be careful. Don't buy the $33 version of this book (ISBN 0-395-90331-9). It ONLY includes the Book. Buy the $42 version of this book (ISBN 0-395-94540-2). That is the Package Edition, and includes both the Book and the Audiocassettes.

Sue Miller is specifc and detailed
We've been working on a lot of material on voice and accent for Indian Call Centers dealing with the American market.

This appears to be the best book I have come across.

It is very detailed and easy to understand and beats the current book and CD offerings like American Accent training.

A definite must buy if you are into accent reduction for individuals or training.

Enchanting, Inspiring, Disquieting
This is an enchanting book, about a miraculous world, made accessible to the rest of us because of the author's delightful, cultured and very refined style. Her life is inspiring but also disquieting. She seems to find magic in the ordinary as well as the extraordinary and this is a challence to all of us.

Understanding Mexoco
If you are planning to visit Mexico, and would like to understand the unique Mexican Temperament....this book is a must read..well written by a gutsy lady

Gripping Adventure, Deeply Personal
A wistful book, an exciting book, very revealing of Mexico, with adventures known to few. A "poppy hunt" to track opium dealers in the mountains, the JFK Assassination, a coming of age in a unique country. Beautifully written, different, readable, thought-provoking. Here is someone who is not only concerned for the future of mankind and the planet but who is willing to commit to a code of conduct. I loved this book and highly recommend it.

Travels in the Asian World
Published in Hardcover by Xlibris Corporation (December, 2002)
Author: Carol Miller
Average review score:

Miller's Best Yet!
TRAVELS IN THE ASIAN WORLD,the latest in some fifteen books by Carol Miller, is particularly delightful because it reveals more about the author as a human than any previous work. Besides an astute observer of foreign cultures, we see Miller as a wife, mother and friend. She unveils her travels in China, for example, through what seems like an incomprehensible friendship with a New Yorker named Jeanne, but ends up being a long-lasting one, largely through Miller's empathy and compassion for the less privileged. With her husband and two children in tow, she travels from China through the verisimilitude of mainland Southeast Asia (Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos). Like THE GUTTERED DOG, Miller achieves a splendid balance between history, politics, current affairs, travel, local color and humor. She spans centuries fluidly and soars from ancient history to modern times in a readable and lucid style. The text comprises five books and thirty-six chapters, organized geographically. Her descriptions are crisp and vivid. Anyone who has or has not seen a farmer in China can envision'...a sprinkling can, one on each shoulder, carried by lean men in blue farming clothes, their heads covered with straw hats, their rolled up pants' legs revealing mud-streaked legs.' During these times of global crisis and uncertainty in the world when one may hesitate to travel to Asia, I recommend that you go there with Carol Miller in TRAVELS IN THE ASIAN WORLD. It is a riveting read written by a perceptive and sensitive author.

Amazing Book
In this amazing book Carol Miller, an amazing writer, takes us through five key areas: China, Tibet, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. Travel, keen observations of the land and its people, and personal anecdotes blend with succinct and comprehensive treatment of history and background, to give the reader depth and understanding. We see not only what these countries are but how they came to be. I will read anything Carol Miller writes but in addition, I would give anything to be able to travel with her, anywhere in the world! Assuming, of course, I could keep up with her.

Great reading
This book is fun, funny, informative, exploratory and thought-provoking, like all Carol Miller's work, but this time she takes us to an uncommon part of the world, opens our eyes and hearts, and leads us through customs, tradtions and history previously unsuspected. The sounds and flavors come alive. We are just as much at home on a crowded modern street as prowling through an ancient temple. An incredible book.

U-Boats: The Illustrated History of the Raiders of the Deep
Published in Hardcover by Brasseys, Inc. (May, 2000)
Author: David Miller

Excellent
I collect and read books on U-Boats, and this illustrated history is an excellent addition to my library. A must for those who are World War II buffs!

A Fantastic Work for Anybody Interested in U-Boats or WWII
This book really surprised me. I actually bought it on in impulse with a gift certificate I had received for my birthday. I had seen "Das Boot" and "U-571" and since my interested was peaked by these movies, I thought I should buy a book about U-Boats to get the full story of their role in WWI and WWII.

This book did not disappoint! It is simply incredible considering how much information is between the covers as well as how many striking photographs are contained in this book. One could almost consider it an Encyclopedia on U-Boats. This book describes the full history of Deutschlands Unterseeboot Programe as well as a detailed history and explination of each type of boat. It also has a table listing every U-Boat made and a brief history about each ship. This book also does a fantastic job explaining the role of these vessels in WWII (and to a lesser extent, WWI). I can imagine with "U-571" in theaters and "Das Boot" on DVD, U-Boat interest has increased. I would suggest to anybody interested in U-Boats because of these movies or for any other reason to look no futher. "U-Boats : The Illustrated History of the Raiders of the Deep" is probably the best book presently available on this subject.

Another comprehensive history on U-boats
Many Books on subjects like U-boats go in and out of print and are sometimes even collectors items! If this book ever goes out of print (which I hope it wont) it will be in the same category as U-boats under the Swatstika by j.p. Mallmann Showell, and U-boat War by Luthar Gunther Buchheim. This is a wonderful book for anyone that loves U-boats and their operations and likewise for the person who just 'thinks' they are interested! So if you think you have a little interest in U-boats get this book!

The Untouched Key: Tracing Childhood Trauma in Creativity and Destructiveness
Published in Paperback by Anchor Books (February, 1991)
Authors: Alice Miller, Hildegarde Hannum, and Hunter Hannum
Average review score:

Extraordinary Insight
In The Untouched Key, the great psychiatrist Alice Miller has written another penetrating work about the manifestation of subconscious experiences into the conscious world. As far as I am concerned, most of the more recent modern writers on the subject have little to add to works like this one. Here is a highly respected and successful therapist, who went out on a limb and confessed to her colleagues, at a time when she could have been basking in the glory of seniority, that she finally realized she only went into the field to learn how to heal her own pain; and then had the courage to withdraw her membership from psyciatric associations once she realized their hypocrisy (which she took full responsibility for in herself, as well).

In this very fine but brief work, Alice Miller studies pivotal works of art and compares their content with the life stories of their creators. The resulting analysis is impeccably true-to-life and highly plausible. She does not trivialize art in doing so, but makes a sound case for how artistic expression could be the great liberator of mankind, and brings us to even greater respect of the artists she discusses. Whether they knew it or not (probably not?) their unrestrained creativity is presented as a gift to teach and inspire us all, subconsciously or consciously, whether or not we choose to analyze it ourselves.

Demystifying Childhood
This is one of the most important books you could ever read. It takes the world of childhood to a place you will never forget. As Miller walks you through her interpretations of the lives and self expression of Keaton, Nietzsche, Picasso, Kollwitz and others, you will learn intuitively how to interpret things the way she does. There is a loss of innocence in this process so it is a kind of initiation which comes to the depths of your soul. Your life will be much richer for this knowlege and your understanding of children and the inner child of every adult you know will be that much riper. Once you have read this book, you will wonder how you could ever have been so DEAF and so DUMB and so BLIND!!

Alice Through the looking glass
I think it is time that ALice Miller recieve the credit due her for her enormous efforts in uncovering coded childhood trauma. Her tireless work has had an transformative and empowering impact on my life and the way I view my childhood and children. In this book Alice uncovers what some people want to view as a "masterpieces" of "ART". "What is really going on here?"she asks. "Look deeper..what is this artist trying to communicate". At times Alice observes and brings to light that the artist is screaming. THis book is SO important!

War Plan Orange: The U.S. Strategy to Defeat Japan, 1897-1945
Published in Hardcover by United States Naval Inst. (September, 1991)
Author: Edward Stanley Miller
Average review score:

Who said we weren't prepared!
Edward Miller's "War Plan Orange" is a well researched and effectively written book on the United states Navy's plan of action against a naval threat from the Empire of Japan. He covers the plan from it's initial design, through it's many changes, and through the point where it was "taken off the self" and executed.
While the sneak attack by the Japanese at Pearl Harbor might have destroyed a large portion of the physical fleet. One thing they could not touch was this plan and through it's use as the foundation for the US response, the defeat of Japan was assured. Let's hope that we still make plans that prove this effective.

Excellent analysis of military and geopolitical factors.
Author Edward Stanley Miller has expertly distilled the political and military conditions of each era of war planning for the Pacific Theater. Using a plethora of original references to illustrate contemporary reasons for each era of stratagy, Mr. Miller has done a yeoman's job. The text is logical (a difficult task to identify all of the ebbs and flows of the various planning bodies of the time)and informative. The supporting tables, charts and maps are helpful but could have been expanded. Additional maps of Midway, Corregidor and various other key locations would have enhanced the text. Considering the main thrust of this scholarly work however , any lack of illustrative aids is not a major handicap. This book serves as a benchmark for U.S. military and geopolitical stratagy in the greater Pacific area for the first half of the twentieth century.

A revelatory vindication of interwar military plans.
Too often these days both fictional and "factual" scholarly and media representations of military personnel falls into two categories: buffoons or renegades. Edward S. Miller explodes the myth that the interwar military planners were a bunch of buffoons and the actual combatants who won the war against Japan a bunch of brilliant innovators. War Plan Orange reveals the careful, thoughtful debate and study that went into Pacific War Planning for 48 years. In the final analysis, about the only mistake the interwar planners actually made was to underestimate time and resources required (something that happens with every campaign). As to basic strategy, their work was sound. The campaigners of WW2--some of whom helped with interwar planning--did nothing innovative, they simply executed a good plan proven through much wargaming and study.

White Saddle
As a child in the 6th grade, my teacher read this book to her class. To this day, 30 plus years later, I remember the gentle spirit of White Saddle and the many adventures. I look forward to sharing this book with my granddaughter.

White Saddle
This book is wonderful. Having had it read to me as a child, it has remained a favorite for my sibling and children for years.

White saddle
A lovely old pony whispers her life story to children asleep beneath an apple tree and what a tale it is. Made even more special because White Saddle was a real pony. Your children will fall in love with "White Saddle" subtle lessons and real excitement with a heart warming ending.
